About Me
Darren Guille – AMUSF trained and founder of MAKER Traditional Upholstery
Having always had a love for antiques and interiors I looked for a way to combine these passions and continue to be creative. I’d worked in the luxury retail market as a Director of Creative and Visual Merchandising, but after 30 years, I felt I needed a change of pace and a new challenge. I discovered the Shoreditch Design Rooms in London, and enrolled on one of their upholstery courses. Three years later and I graduated in November 2021.

I now work out of a workshop based in the historic market town of Saffron Walden, North Essex
At MAKER each piece of furniture is carefully assessed before any work is carried out. All stages of the upholstery process are patiently undertaken incorporating traditional and where possible sustainable materials all finished by hand.

Whether it’s a tired but treasured chair or a much-loved family heirloom, there’s nothing more satisfying than breathing new life into a cherished piece of furniture. MAKER, using traditional upholstery techniques and materials, offer a bespoke upholstery service.
Reupholstery
Full reupholstery service. Fabric and materials are striped back to the frame and completely reupholstered from the frame up.
Re-cover
Where the upholstery is still in sound condition a re-cover is a good way of refreshing a piece of furniture by replacing the top fabric only.
Woodwork/frame repair
Traditional wooden frames were built to last but until a piece of furniture is stripped it’s difficult to assess if there is any repair work required to the frame. We can undertake frame repair and show wood finishing.
Fabric Consultancy
If you need assistance or have a particular fabric in mind we are able to advise on fabrics to suit your needs, alternativley if you already have fabric we are happy to discuss the suitability and work with your choice.
